During the past three weeks, Elemental Water Makers has visited the island regions of Spain to interview all stakeholders in the renewable driven desalination market. More than 75 interviews were held with potential end-users, suppliers, public bodies, research institutes and large water companies, which have led to much insights.The islands of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria all rely on desalination and have a well established market. However, the water tariffs and taxes for resorts are high and with the dependency on the imported energy, this calls for a solution. Mallorca is another story, with the desalination capacity decreasing by increasing rainfall & management. However, much water has to be transported by trucks to rural areas and much of the groundwater requires treatment by reverse osmosis, leaving enough opportunities.
