Luxury eco island resort using solar desalination in The Bahamas.

The world’s first solar-powered, shared-ownership yacht and residence club, “Ki’ama” is appropriately derived from the Arawakan language spoken by the original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. It brings together “earth spirit” and “water” to perfectly capture the ethos of the new, totally sustainable, Ki’ama Bahamas private-island community.

As any island on the Bahamas, access to clean water is a huge challenge. Desalination is the main solution, accounting for 90% of the water supply in the Bahamas. However, desalination is energy intensive and electricity is expensive on the Bahamas. This is one of the reasons why Ki’ama went for a desalination solution that uses 70% less electricity, as well as does not require any chemicals for operation and maintenance. Running their appliances on solar energy, it truly ensures no footprint by only using the sea and sun. Well done!

We’ve been in touch with the engineers of EWM from the early-stage design, towards the successful implementation of the project. Although facing the inevitable delay on our end in construction, and making several changes during the process, the team was super flexible and patient. We are now making water using a fraction of the energy of a standard RO, which helps in the sustainability of our business, as well as reduces our energy bills. Thanks EWM!
